Start the New Year on an exciting note by visiting Letchworth State Park on January 1st, 2020 for their First Day Hikes kickoff event. There will be five guided hikes offered throughout the day and even self-guided opportunities to explore the winter wonderland yourself!
Letchworth State Park was voted the #1 State Park in the Nation in 2015 by USA Today’s 10 Best Contest and in 2017 USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice for Best Attraction in New York State, so this is a can’t miss event for those outdoor lovers.
The activity-filled day starts bright and early with the first guided hike, the “Hike for Birds” starting at 9 AM sharp. For those who are traveling a long distance, you might want to consider getting there the day before and staying the night at the historic Glen Iris Inn which puts you a walking distance away from the hiking trails. You have a choice of staying at one of three beautiful accommodations: Caroline’s Cottage, The Chalet House, and The Stone House; which can accommodate anywhere from 6 to 8 people, giving more than enough room for your friends and family!
The five guided hikes cater towards all skill levels with distances ranging from less than a mile for the beginners, or up to 4–miles for those looking to explore Letchworth to its fullest extent. After a nice long morning hike, be sure to fill up on some amazing food at the Caroline Dining Room, located inside Glenn Iris Inn. Their lunch menu offers a multitude of options from hot soups, sandwiches, and steaming entrées, this is a great way to take a break and warm up with delicious food.
After you had time to rest and warm up, head back outside and join the “Hike to Learn” which runs from 1 PM to 3 PM. This is a slower-paced hike that makes stops at some of the most beautiful locations in Letchworth State Park; consisting of the Inspiration Point, the Glen Iris Fountain, and the Middle Falls. You will be guided through trails, roads, and stairs while learning about the history of Letchworth State Park. On this 2-mile hike, you will encounter state and national champion trees as well as breathtaking views.
The energetic day comes to an end around 3 O’clock, but that does not mean you have to leave gorgeous Letchworth State Park. Stay the night at the relaxing Glen Iris Inn with your friends and family reminiscing on your fun-filled day! Enjoy a hot dinner and a warm bed and fully immerse yourself in the winter wonderland of Western New York.
